Frequently Asked Questions
Why is C280 called Muntz metal?
C280 is named after George Muntz who patented the 60/40 copper-zinc alloy in 1832. It was originally developed as a cost-effective alternative to copper for ship hull sheathing and remains the standard marine brass alloy.
Is C280 the best brass for marine applications?
C280 offers excellent marine performance. For extreme saltwater exposure, naval brass (C464 — with added tin) provides even better dezincification resistance. RKIC Group supplies both grades — contact our technical team.
Can C280 be used in high-temperature applications?
Yes. C280 has excellent hot-working properties and maintains good strength at elevated temperatures, making it suitable for heat exchangers, steam fittings and high-temperature industrial applications.
